Food for nourishing blood and Yin in Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that herbs and food have the same origin. So in daily life, Chinese people like to eat certain food or add herbs to their diet for improving body condition, maintaining health, or promoting healing. The old experiences are related to particular cultural habits that cannot be exactly replicated to the Western life, but can serve as useful suggestions that may be helpful to you. The article tells about the food that nourishes blood and Yin.

Food for nourishing blood

People with deficiency of Qi and blood may have symptoms like pale face, dizziness, and palpitations. Foods that nourish both of Qi and blood include carrots, peanuts, spinach, jujubes, ricefield eel, longan flesh, chicken, pig’s liver, goat meat, and mutton. These kinds of food can be made into soups with Chinese herbs such as Huang Qi, Ren Shen, and Dang Gui.

When people suffer from deficiency of heart blood, symptoms may be palpitations, forgetfulness and insomnia. Food that nourishes blood and benefit the heart include longan flesh, lychee, jujubes, grapes, pig’s heart and chicken. Theese kinds of food can be made into soups with Chinese herbs such as Ren Shen, Dang Gui, Suan Zao Ren, and Fu Ling.

Those with deficiency of liver blood may suffer from blurred vision, dizziness, pain of hypochondriac regions, twitching of tendons and muscles, numbness of hands and feet. Food that nourishes blood and benefits the liver include carrots, spinach, pig’s liver, chicken liver. These kinds of food can be made into soups with Chinese herbs like Gou Qi, Sang Shen, He Shou Wu, and Dang Gui.

Food for nourishing Yin

When liver-Yin is deficient, liver-Yang may excessively move upwards, leading to internal wind which is also called deficient wind. The person may suffer from twitching of hands and feet, spasm of sinew and meridians, and dizziness. Food that nourishes Yin and calm the wind include black soybeans, Chinese softshell turtle, turtle meat, oyster meat, and the yolk of chicken eggs. These kinds of food can be made into soups with Chinese herbs like Sang Shen and Bai Shao, and other raw materials of Chinese medicine like Gui Jia, and Bie Jia.

When the Yin of the body is deficient, the Yang may be active excessively, leading to deficient fire. The person may feel the heat of palms and feet, and the region of the heart may feel hot and uncomfortable. The symptoms of deficient fire also includes night sweating, flushed cheeks, and hectic fever. Food that nourishes Yin and clear heat include pears, lotus root, water chestnuts, sugar cane, turtle meat, meat of soft-shelled turtle, cow’s milk and the yolk of chicken eggs. These kinds of food may be made into soups with Chinese herbs such as Sheng Di Huang, Gou Qi, Sang Shen, and other raw materials of Chinese medicine like Gui Jia.

Food for moistening dryness

People with deficient stomach-Yin may suffer from dry mouth and throat, and dry stools. Food that benefits the stomach and promotes the production of body fluid include pears, sugar cane, water chestnuts, lotus root, cow’s milk, sesame seeds and honey. These kinds of food can be made into soups with Chinese herbs such as Mai Dong and Shi Hu.

When the pathogenic dryness hurts the Yin of lungs, the person may suffer from dry nose, dry and painful throat, dry cough without phlegm, or few phlegm with a little blood. The food that moistens the dryness and promotes the production of body fluid include pears, lotus root, water chestnuts, persimmons, loquat, honey, crystal sugar, pig lungs, cow’s milk. These kinds of food can be made into soups with Chinese herbs like Bai He, Sha Shen, and Mai Dong. Those with dry skin can also eat like this.
